I didn't mention anything about cities. Yes, driving in Tokyo will probably give you an aneurysm - but driving from city to city - Tokyo -> Kyoto, Kyoto > Osaka, Kyoto > Nagasaki etc - is just magnificent. I've driven down the country, and trained on the way back up - and the scenery and experience of the car just doesn't even start to compare to the train.
Local transport - trains are great.
