I think his big mistake was bringing his girlfriend along.
Hell... any cat or dog owner can attest to how pets can get when you bring an unknown person into their environment.
The fact that he didn't bank on a group of Alpha animals acting adversely just goes to show he really didn't know what the hell he was doing.
