Many comedians are funny people using the humor to hide serious issues that they hold inside. The lifestyle of many of these standup players is a lonely trek down the road 50 weeks a year to be able to make a decent living, which often means either no family life at all or a family you see once a month for a couple of days between gigs.
Like many performers, they spend their times in bars and nightclubs, which is another temptation of how to bury the issues. It is very tough. Even making it to the top means an endless grind of appearances all over the country, the money is better but the working conditions aren't exactly wonderful.
Comedy ain't pretty.
