valium, falls within the drug classification of benzodiazepines.
Benzo's include xanax, valium, ambien, halcion, etc. etc.
basically all work the same way...the molecules hit the blood stream, travel to the brain & work on certain neuron receptors (much like alcohol in that its the same effect as a central nervous system depressant)
valium is in fact used as a muscle relaxer in certain instances (as well as sleep aid) but these were not the intended uses of the medication
benzo's were originally made to treat seizures & severe anxiety (like freaking out because u got stung by 30 bee's & think u might swell up anxiety), as they slow down the overactive receptors responsible for them
of course now valium & xanax are used as alcohol for the suburbanites who refuse to admit they have a drinking or marriage problem
