I did it for my house, but my house is a log home, so it might be a bit different than a regular house.

I also was able to have the same guys do all my plumbing, HVAC and electrical, so that simplified things a lot. And I had one crew do all the interior and exterior carpentry, so that also brought down the number of people I was dealing with.

I'm not sure that I even saved any money by doing it this way, but it was a great learning experience and things turned out OK.

Another problem is that I wasn't really getting the discounts on building supplies that a regular general contractor would get, since this is a one-time deal as Scooter mentioned. But if you factor in the money I saved on the general contractor fees I guess I probably broke even.
