This is very true, but hacking the display for not showing specific fields, changing the default, and the whole thing is 100% CSS wrapped in TXP. TXP lets you edit down to the small field how you want the topics laid out.
These are piss poor examples, I'll admit, but
ToonPornBlog,
GrouchyAdmin, and
Erratic Wisdom all run the same core, and take little work to change between the styles, with the same backend.
TXP also supports XMLRPC so you can use any XMLRPC capable program to post blogs to it - and it doesn't suffer from the various issues WordPress has had over the years.
I've used WP, and I think it's decent. I just like how you can break everything apart in TXP with less work. ;)
