There were 9 seasons. In (I believe) Season 7, her husband Dan had a heart attack. The epsidoes from Season 7-9 showed that he recovered and all was well. In the finale, she explains how Dan never recovered, and he actually died. She continued to say that seasons 7-9 was a book that she wrote after Dan died, and that she was basically writing about how she thought things would be if he had, indeed, lived.
The last few seasons of the show sucked reallly bad, and for her to say it never happend, and that it was all just a book she was writing, pissed a lot of fans off. It was as if she was justifying why the last few seasons sucked and it was a totally out-the-blue ending.
