10 posts per page works well for me.

To minimize dup content (visa vis tag/category pages) I don't put the entire post in the main page - use the [more] separator to show only the introduction to the post. This way, the main pages are unique with lots of relevant text and the expanded posts are large enough that they don't conflict with the "pre-more" text.

Don't get greedy with tags, and be sure to actually use the keywords you tag in the "pre-more" text.

I have blogs which don't have any inbound blogroll links and they get daily SE traffic (G,Y,M).

Also tweek your WP scripts to reverse the titles so that the blog post title appears before the blog title. There are plugins which do this - I rewrote the code myself and also ensured that the DESCR tag and ROBOTS directives appeared correctly in the header.

The key is actual original coherent content. One post per blog per day.
