Really interesting point!
I think its got more to do with the audience. You see politicians play the same game all the time - change their speech and the context of their argument to fit the audience.
It's far more noticable when it's at the extreme, such as when you're hearing public speeches and such, than in the everyday.
I've come across many a person who's changed their attitude to me as I feed them information about who I am or where I come from. I think it has more to do in relating to the group you are trying to become part of. We're all imitators afterall
