Fight it in every way that you can. My grandfather died of lung cancer (smoking combined with being a coal minter) but I just watched my mother in law beat her second round of cancer in 10 years. It was hard as hell on her but she is 70 and beat it and at a much more advanced stage that required radiation. So, you can do it too.
