If a certain stock gets a barrage of buying, many times it will drive the price up. Generally the spammers are sitting on a bunch of shares and will sell out as soon as it starts to climb. If you buy off the spam you may see a little increase but usually by the time you try to sell the stock plummets because spammers have sold out. The SEC is in the news all the time cracking down on stock spam. These days I don't know how effective stock spam is, but a few years ago when it was newer, there were a few people who made an absolute killing.
