Besides being one of the most confusing airports I've ever been in, and certainly showing its age, it wasn't THAT bad when we were there. As someone mentioned earlier it is like a freaking maze. You'd swear you had been walking miles and you were no where near where you were supposed to be. The bathrooms were shaped a little odd since the entire "wing" we were on (terminal 2?) was like the body of an airplane. Gatwick was nice, I thought.
ATL has some bad bathrooms too - the ones behind the waiting line at the top of the escalators for arrivals ALWAYS seems to be just nasty filthy dirty. Or at least they were up until about 4 years ago when I stopped using them Plus at ATL you pretty much have to pack a lunch to get from the parking lot to your gate. They're also one of the few airports that doesn't have a separate security line for 1st/Frequent Flyer/Airport club members. They have a separate line that gets you to security that is SOMETIMES faster but then you have to fight everyone else to get into the actually x-ray lines.
Orange County/Santa Ana/John Wayne and San Diego airports are so far my favorites for getting in and out fast, except for the little tiny ones like Hilton Head.
