I remember talking to my vet and the guy at the pet store and all that - and though I don't remember exactly what they told me, I do remember I settled on feeding my 2 cats around 1 can of wet food each per 3 meals of dry food.
They each grew to around 25+ pounds.... one of them, a Russian Blue, was more like a small panthar than a housecat, really. :-)
Best advice is to find and confer with a good vet - sounds like it may still need its shots (a necessity) anyways.
But, I say feed it a wet/dry mixture, and wein off the amount of wet food you put in it over time - then eventually supplement the missing wet food in its diet by serving it a separate dish of wet food every couple days.
Dry food > Wet food in regards to long term and overall health. Wet food plays a part, too, though - so the cat should have some in its diet.
