Tom, ask to talk to the social worker there. You'd be amazed at how much they'll knock off the bill. When I had my son we had no health insurance and got about 50% in discounts for paying cash to the hospital, my doctor gave me a "professional discount" which was the fee he would charge one of his nurses, the anesthesiologist knocked of several hundred dollars, etc.
There are also grants that the hospital receives to cover uninsured patients - there are forms and such to fill out but it will probably be worth it!
