Usually what I do is align them, and then count out the spaces between each.

For example icon a, b, c, d, e. I will move A 10 spaces to the left...then lock a and b together and now move them 10 more spaces to the left, then lock a,b, and c together and move those 10 spaces to the left, and so on until they are all evenly spaced.

If the spacing looks nice, I then lock them all together put them inside a folder and center them. About the easiest way I know how to do it.
