My dad played banjo when I was a kid (Dixieland and Bluegrass), so he taught me to play a little, but it wasn't really for me, as I was already getting into rock music by then.

When we moved to Hawaii, I first learned to play ukelele a little, and then when I was 12 my next door neighbor and I decided we wanted to be rock stars and so we begged our parents for guitars.

I am glad I started on acoustic guitar, because it is much less forgiving of sloppy playing, and teaches you to get in touch with your instrument. With a good foundation in folk music and unplugged rock (long before it was called that), we saved our money from delivering papers and mowing lawns in order to purchase our first electric guitars when we were 13.

We played almost daily for three years, adding more guitars and amps all the time. I really loved the Led Zeppelin song "The Battle of Evermore" (and various Seals and Crofts, and America songs that used mandolin), so I decided to get a mandolin when I was around 14-15.

As with guitar I am mostly self-taught (I watch other players and memorize part by part what they are doing). To this day I can't read music. I actually wish I could, but it didn't stop me from playing in cover bands for several years. Some of the most fun times of my life.
