Then when 6 came out, story goes that people were so pissed off with the ending of 5, that Lucas rewrote the story and tied everything up all neat and tidy, thereby eliminating what he'd written as stories 7-9.

First of all Return of the Jedi was Episode 6 not 5. I did see Star Wars in the movie theater, but I was young. So I can rememebr if it said Episode 4 or not. I do remember seeing The Empire Strikes Back and it did in fact say Episode 5. This was in 1980.
And no one was pissed at 5. Actually The Empire Strikes Back was considered the best of the original 3.
