For the short term...cable is faster. And everyone can max out their connections on cable (in most areas, outside of nyc etc.) FIOS operates on the shared bandwidth level, so at 6pm in a good sized neighborhood your fucked into 4mbps.
Cable companies will (for the next 2 years) still rule the chicken coop. Until bandwidth is so inexpensive & home computers are fast enough to even utilize 100mbps connections.
