I don't want to sound like a know-it-all, but I think I can answer this question too. The doctors bullshitted poor Eros. They said that his stomach is "on the other side"? What, is he a Vulcan? They couldn't determine that beforehand even if it was true?
What actually happened is that they put the poor guy under general anesthesia- which is risky in and of itself, especially if you are overweight and unhealthy- and then they started cutting him open. His body went into shock of course and they immediately decided to abandon the procedure as too dangerous, were luckily able to stabilize him and sew him back up without him expiring on the operating table as so many do. After they wiped the sweat off of their brow they made up a cock-in-bull story about his stomach being "on the other side" and suggested a different procedure so that they wouldn't have to give him his money back. Then they performed willful malpractice by cutting him open again a day later. And he thinks they they did him a favor! Anyway, good luck with your recovery Eros, I want you to succeed after all you have been through.
