Not correct... the people at awstats realize that and base the calculation only on the number of actual surfer-initiated requests made by IE for favicon, scaling up that number to reflect total visitors.

BUT...

IE does sometimes request the favicon without any action on the part of the surfer; many RSS feed readers request it (obviously only relevant on some sites); and quite a lot of Firefox users apparently surf with their browser disguised as IE (heaven knows why) but still requesting favicon automatically. So yes, the estimated numbers are likely to be much higher than reality.
