I guess I can see where there might be a problem if using the analog outputs, but I always hook my computers up using the digital output directly to a dolby digital receiver.

In my current system I have an older Audigy 2 I think, but I wasn't planning on buying a sound card with my next system, just gonna use the digital output on the motherboard.

Would it mainly just be in-game audio that would suffer with the onboard sound?

on-board using optical won't be total crap.. it's ok, but with a good real sound card the sound will be better.. games/movies/music... That's just from my personal experience with on-board and a real sound card.
