Well, it is the United States OF America. The Big Mac of McDonalds isn't called McDonalds. It's called a Big Mac.
Anyway, the only reason for the confusion is the fact that the US has never really had a name, it has a description. Canada is a name. Mexico is a name. The United States is what they are. A bunch of states that are united together. And therefore, they became the United States of America. But they could have just as easily been the United States of North America.
Think about it... how many countries do you know that is a description of what they are, rather than a proper name?
I'm surprised they refer to themselves as Americans instead of "sacks of mostly water".
