6 seems awfully young for knee problems. It also doesn't make sense that small dogs would suffer more from joint problems. In reality, the larger the dog, the more problems with joints.

If one knee in particular seems to be a problem, your dog may have blown a cruciate or a supporting ligament. In small breed dogs it may be more difficult to notice, but in large breed dogs a limp will be quite pronounced.

Rimadyl IS a good drug for pain, but ocassionaly it can cause serious liver damage. If you can get Meloxacam instead it's probably a better drug.

In any case, best to ask your Vet in person and go with what they suggest.
