Short answer: Nano DOES NOT impact society right now. Neg. Nil. Nada.
NanoTech = making physical machines on a micro level. Nano does NOT = transistors getting smaller, or chip speeds increasing. Two different games there.
If your Prof is an idiot, then he(she)'ll not get that point. NanoTech = micromachines. They just don't exist on a practical level right now. Sure, I can create a gear assembly that works on a nano level, but can I get it to do something useful with 10 billion of those gears, in a reliable manner? Nope. It's all just fun and games right now, and has NO practical impact upon society right now.
10 years in the future...? That's a different question.
