The orogin of 'The Butterfly effect" is in climate science. It is the reason why climate and weather are completely unpredictable.

The mathermatical roots of the effect are in Chaos theory, which is the study if iterative systems (Chaos theory and interative systems give rise to things like The Mandelbrot set.. everyone has seen the 'picture' of what this set looks like).

It is also why I chuckle slightly at "Global Warming" - if chaotic systems were predictable - they wouldn't be chaotic. Mmmm.. paradox-y.
