FWIW, Gateway is doing some great stuff with mobile video and trying to get interest going on the wmlprogramming Yahoo group. Unfortunately most of the people with the resources to contribute to those efforts already have agreements in place that don't jive well with contributing to the community, so it's left to the upstarts who everyone established in the business chooses to ignore.
In other words you won't see WAAT and the like doing anything to further the state of mobile development - best to keep the little guys away and soak up what little money there is in a market that doesn't know how to use the products.
But hey, that's business. It'll be another year or two at least before the floodgates are fully opened and some new faces can start making real money. In the meantime, as I've said already... there's money in mobile right now for those who are willing to not overspend. The bigger your scale, the less likely you are to get by without support from more profitable businesses.
