The punishment for use of a weapon in a crime should be 25 to life, mandatory sentence, and no fucking around. Possession of an unlicensed or stolen handgun mandatory 10 year sentence. All sentences served consecutively to any other sentences received.
The US is majorly soft on crime.

I agree
We need to further punish those who provide guns to people illegally rather than trying to pass a bunch of laws that do nothing but make soccer moms feel safer, but accomplish little else. There also need to be more gun safety programs.
I grew up in rural Wyoming where everyone had a gun (you could legally walk down the street with a pistol strapped to your side, as long as it wasn't concealed and of course you couldn't take them into a bar) and the violent crime rate was almost zero. I think it came from the fact that everyone owned a gun, so that deterred crime and not only did everyone have a gun, they actually knew how to shoot the damn thing. Would any of that have stopped a massacre like this recent tragedy? Probably not. If someone is determined enough to do damage, they will. Look what a couple arabs did with boxcutters and a few airplanes...
