I've always been a Sony guy but got the 360 around Christmas time because a few of my buddies had it and I figured we could all play on XBox live. Unfortunately it died already and I'm currently in customer service hell waiting to get the "coffin" box that they send to you so you can send the console in to get fixed.
I've done some reading on the XBox forums and apparently when you send in your console to get it fixed they send you back a different refurbished one or a new one if necessary. There's been a lot of people who say that shortly after getting the "new" fixed unit back that they then have disc tray issues. Plus since it is a different console with a differnt serial number any of the content purchased through the XBox Live marketplace can not be used online becasue the serial number is different.
I agree that Sony dropped the ball in waiting to release the PS3 but MS definitely dropped the ball by rushing out the 360 which I think is apparent after they extended the warranty from 3 months to one year because so many people were having issues. If you do decide to get the 360 definitely get the extended in store warranty so if you do have issues you can just bring it back to the store and not have to go through MS at all...
