Most people "play the game". They do what's needed to be done to stay out of trouble. From what I understand, the judge ordered Joe to make an agreement with the plaintiffs. He pulled out. Judge charged him with contempt, as he said he would. Joe then got cocky, and more got piled on. People do this every day.

If you get in trouble, you can either pucker up and do what's needed to put out the fire or you can stand proud and throw in more wood. If you're the proud type and want to be a martyr... thats fine, good for you. A lot of advances in society have been made because of these martyrs. But don't play dumb and cry because you're getting picked on by "the big bully". You know what's going to happen, make a decision, be prepared for the consequences.
