Some people would "cheat" and do the old "hunting game" where you would leave one small asteroid floating around and just sit on the edge waiting for the small UFO to come out so you could kill him for an easy 1000 points. Myself, I didn't have that kind of patience
However, at some point, you could get so many free ships racked up that you could actually take a break for a few minutes and just let some of them die, and then come back and go some more
