But we should not complain too much, in the magazine world, I often wait up to 6 months or longer to get paid...

WIRES
I've shot for a number of Canadian clients over the years and now I always require wires upfront. I'm not sure how long you have been shooting for Canadian clients or what your method of delivery is but I can tell you first hand that checks "get lost" often and Canadian Customs loves to hold packages.....In fact, I have had multiple packages simply vanish from within the clutches Canadian Customs.
As far as the magazine thing goes..... In my case, I will book a model for half a day and shoot one set for magazines and the other sets for my regular clients. By doing this, the shoot has already been profitable so I don't mind waiting as much for the payment for ONE set especially when that one set typically pays as much as all the other sets shot that day combined. Those sets can easily be resold to exclusive clients and or sold as non-exclusive so there is no risk in not making the investment back.
