Also because it's still very core physics based, a physics degree is the third highest paying in UK (behind Law and Medicine). It still leaves loads of windows open once I graduate my masters/phd

Sounds like you have it all planned out! I had no clue, but definitely didn't want to study maths or physics.
I read philosophy in the end! Great subject but it isn't always treated like a serious qualification... especially down the pub!
