The people who visit torrent sites are not likely to be exposed to your marketing, basically the target group is narrow and you have to market to them in a different way. Unless you run a torrent site their actions don't have much effect on your bottom line as you are targetting a different crowd.
And they don't give away full scenes, the key to marketing yourself on torrent sites is to put up part of the scene and make it end in a place where the user will want more. Or as some do, basically add the torrent but then stop seeding, which leads to getting banned after a while.
This is basically the same as running password sites, as some programs do to market themselves to another target group that wont fall for the same marketing tactics as the average surfer. The best way I've seen this done is to have the password automatically stop working for an IP after X amount of time after login, that's how you get the cheap people to sign up. Or have a site full of bad passwords which leads to frustration and thus to actually purchasing a membership
