Most of the Native Americans were conquered through the use of alcohol, smallpox and subterfuge.

Many of the tribes fought the military off many times using much less advanced weapons then the U.S. military did.

For reference read in particular the history of the Apache and the Sioux.

And yes, most of the movies were bullshit.
