Go to a used car dealer and get yourself a Jeep Cherokee.
Try to find one with less than 100,000 miles and you are good to go for a few years...
The big thing I would check for is a worn out rear end.
Take it to a parking lot. Put it in reverse and drive backwards making tight turns and give it a bit of gas. Then do the same thing in drive. If the rear end is going out you will get popping noises and/or it will feel like your rear end slipped out on you. Like someone nudged the back of the car.
I mention this only because I assume you are buying a 4x4. It might have actually been used as one at some point.
Fixing this problem is $1800 out the door or $600 for the quick fix (restamping the gears).
If that was the only thing wrong and I was getting one for $6K to $8K I would probably buy it anyway and throw it into the shop.
