That's why many of us cash in while working again, but not declaring it to the authorities; also very often you'll hear a freshly fired french guy say "Just been laid off, well, will begin to search for another job in 6 months or so".

If suddently we'd only get 300EUR/mo for 6 months after being fired like it is in the UK, if I remember correctly, the unemployment rate would most definately drop from 9 to 3-4 percents.
