Windows kept firing up media player every few seconds - I couldn't do anything as it took the focus away from the window I was working on......
3 hours of Googling, starting and stopping services and generally tearing what little hair I have left out I finally worked it out.
I had an old remote keyboard that I spilt wine on and dumped at the side of the desk as it had died totally.
Well it must have dried just enough for the "media player" button to work, and the receiver hadn't been unplugged from the USB port. So it just kept starting it.
I threw it out the 4th floor window into the garden and that seems to have fixed the problem
