I have a rear wheel drive car which I noticed is lacking something pretty basic, and cheap: a couple of "U" frames around each end of the driveshaft (not normally touching) to catch it if one of the universal joints fails.
I had a water pump fail when I was waiting at the lights. The engine didn't stop, but the car made a horrible racket and I was debating whether to stop it, or wait for the lights to change... luckily they changed pretty quickly so I was able to pull over.
The same car broke a timing belt not too long after that, while I was rolling.

Surprisingly there was no engine damage... pity, because it was a lemon.
