The most important thing the first few times is choosing a dead calm day. Absolutely no wind at all. Even a light breeze will have a surprisingly large effect on a small RC aircraft, and if you're not used to flying you'll overcompensate at the controls and crash.
The model shop you buy from should be more than happy to hook you up with someone to give you a few lessons.
