I'm not sure how many people realize that commercial sites should pay for Akismet? It's not a matter of being Mr. Honest, but that they offer three levels of service and their free users requests get the slowest responses. Not good if you have a busy site...
IMO a combo of Bad Behavior and Spam Karma works better and keeps everything local. BB is useful for people with comments off but who get the comments file hit directly, because it blocks direct access.
