Every situation is a little different. If his traffic is high quality and they don't know what they just signed up for but they are the type that will spend money than he may be able to get away with doing things that way.
I would say in most cases if you don't explain to the people what they are signing up to and just link to an ifriends joing page 75% of the people will think they are signing up to something else. The signup page doesn't give much information on it at all. I think this is where a lot of people run into problems they just throw out the signup page and the surfer thinks he is signing up to something else, he gets into ifriends and says " wtf is this" and then leaves.... but you still get paid. If that happens 1 too many times, than your account gets closed because they are losing money off of you.
