no, vbulletin had nothing to do with it. You can use native characters or punycode. Reason it works with vbulletin is because native characters are unicode, or utf. If you typed the native characters onto an html page coded in iso or something other than utf-8, then there could be errors in browser mapping. When you use the punycode as the link, it shows the native characters in the browser as well as the on mouseover, etc.. only place you see the punycode is in the source code.
