To use Blackberry messenger you should just need a blackberry and a BIS account.

This information is stored in the BIS account on your wireless providers' servers, not in the phone itself. If you change the PIN/EMEI registered in the BIS system, your email will stop being delivered to the old handset (though they'll still have any email stored on it).
