I don't reinstall often enough to really think about that - I'd probably lose the CD and have to do the whole lot anyway.

I am a little puzzled why WU presented me with a bunch of older updates prior to offering SP2, though - shouldn't that have included all past updates?
Anyway, compared to manually reinstalling applications, doing the WU thing for 15 mins is nothing. The only gotcha is that I need to remember to firewall all inbound connections at my router when I first install XP.
