One of the most famous stories in the Bible is Jesus throwing the money lenders out of the temple. It was probably this action, if true, that condemned him. The church was already only about money.
1,000 years later churches were charging people to look at fragments on his cross, well they said they were fragments.
Today they still have relics, the shroud, and some churches actually expect you to give part of your earning to the church. For true wealth look at the Mormons temple in Salt Lake and the Vatican in Rome.
Religion is a business, they get pissed when one of their priests rips off the money they ripped off.
