Letting the model dictate the pay is what amateurs do. She is the commodity item, and the market has a lot more to do with what she's worth than what she thinks she's worth. One reason for working in Portland instead of LA is lots of pretty girls who'll work at relatively low rates and no agencies to fuck around with.

A friend of mine has a theory that when a model tells you "I get $150/hr" what she means is somebody paid her that once. Maybe it was some amateur photographer who wasn't approaching it as a business expense to be minimized, or maybe it was a photographer in a totally different market (magazine photography, for example).

I find that holding the line on what I pay will get me models even in Las Vegas and L.A.! These girls work for me at about half what they are used to getting. Why? As one girl put it, "It was easy work, it took me just a couple hours, and it was $150 I didn't have when I woke up this morning."
