I've always been under the impression that when there's a draft, and you fall into the right age bracket, you go. Period.
As baddog said above, the military would find something for you to do, objector or not... but you'd go.
Or you could try to run away, as you said, and be a draft dodger. It's come to my understanding that that's not the best label to have to live with for the rest of one's life, but hey, at least you'd be alive right?
