SEO stuff actually gives me a headache and for at least the past 5 years I have tended towards the belief that unless you go full-on black hat, it's easy to put in more effort than the return will justify. I do think it makes sense to build all the commonly recognized basics into a site and still more sense to stay clear of the equally well-recognized no-no's.
Unfortunately, the online porn industry being as it is, we prefer the ease of using tables to taking the time to learn CSS. We see an SE-friendly concept such as blogs, strip it of all which makes it SE-friendly and still kid ourselves we are running blogs. Because natural/organic linking is difficult, we somehow come to the conclusion that blatantly manipulative link exchanges will work instead.
So it isn't difficult to point out the common pitfalls. But that's a long way short of knowing the topic well
