SPIDER TOWN / by Luke Duggleby. During the years of the Khmer Rouge genocide, a curious foodstuff played its part in saving the population of a town called Skuon. For its residents, driven deeper into the jungle to avoid persecution, starvation was rife and culinary invention became essential for survival ? the solution: tarantulas. Up to 15 cm across, they became obvious targets and provided vital proteins in times of severe shortages of more orthodox food. But while the need for reliance on the spiders to survive has evaporated, the taste for them has endured, and Skuon has managed to capitalise on this unremitting fad by establishing itself as Cambodia's Spider Eating centre. OnAsia photographer Luke Duggleby got closed to the hairy food.
