The only official radiocarbon tests upon the Shroud in 1988 reported a medieval timeframe for the cloth's production. Analysis of the image by Chemist Walter McCrone in 1981, showed that iron oxide was present upon the cloth, and from this he theorised that medieval pigments (which contain iron oxide) were used in some way to form the image of a human body.
